SINGAPORE – The celebrated historian of India, William Dalrymple, is whizzing through the streets of teeming Delhi when he picks up the phone.

He is in the back of a taxi, shuttling between a meeting with his publisher and a book signing, where an anticipatory crowd is waiting for him to hold forth on his beloved subject for the umpteenth time.
