BANGKOK - When Mr Pollawat Chaiwut was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2020, doctors in Bangkok prescribed medicine that would slow the progress of his tumour.

It cost 120,000 baht (S$4,434.74) a month – about three times the monthly income of the driver and his wife, Ms Doalayada Chaichompoo.
