SINGAPORE – Just like the 7,000-strong audience in attendance, home-grown singer Stefanie Sun was also caught by surprise at fellow Singaporean Mandopop star JJ Lin’s onstage appearance at her concert on April 13.

Sun, 46, kicked off the Aut Nihilo Sun Yanzi In Concert, her first world tour in a decade, in Singapore on April 5, and held three more sold-out shows at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on April 6, 12 and 13.

Lin’s cameo had earlier been teased by local singer Chen Diya of music duo The Freshman, who was among the audience. During the song request segment of the April 13 concert, she said a singer with the surname Lin might make an appearance.

Sun was performing her track What I Miss (2007) when Lin, 44, unexpectedly appeared from the back of the stage singing the same song.

She was visibly stunned as she was reportedly kept in the dark about his inclusion, which was planned in advance by him and his team some time ago.

Lin had previously delivered a moving cover of What I Miss on Chinese reality show Sound Of My Dream in 2016.

After they performed the song together at her concert, Lin said he had to turn up as he, like her fans, have waited 11 years for her to hold a solo show.

He had rushed back to Singapore after completing the Melbourne leg of his JJ Lin JJ20 Final Lap World Tour on April 11 so that he could share the same stage with Sun on April 13.

Sun admitted she did not invite Lin to be a guest as she was concerned about troubling him.

Praising his rendition of What I Miss, she added: “You are worthy of being a walking CD. You have been singing my key, as if you were helping me with the chord.”

Sun and Lin are good friends both onstage and off.

The pair collaborated at Lin’s concert in 2010. They wrote the song She Says (2010) together and performed it at his concert in 2013.

In February 2021, they posted on social media a video of themselves making jiaozi (dumpling in Chinese) together.
