How can youth help save historic buildings? Share your ideas at The Foundry with ST Podcasts

SINGAPORE - The former Elections Department (ELD) building in Prinsep Link will be the setting for a pertinent discussion on Feb 12.

The dialogue, on the role millennials can play in the revitalisation of historic buildings, will kick off the first in a series of ST Podcasts Live! events this year. It will start at 6.30pm.

Correspondent Natasha

Ann

Zachariah, host of The Straits Times’ first video podcast The Usual Place, will delve into the topic

of historic buildings

along with

Mr Ng Wee Liang

, who creates content on Singapore heritage, arts and culture; and

Mr Colin Low, chief executive of the Singapore Land Authority.

They will look specifically at how youth can help in the remaking of these buildings or spaces to give them a new buzz and life.

The Prinsep Street backdrop is fitting given it has been transformed into a social impact hub known as The Foundry.

The Foundry provides organisations such as non-profits with a collaborative space to come up with ideas and solutions to social issues such as social isolation and mental health. It was launched by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Nov 28.

The three-storey building served as the ELD office building between 1994 and 2021, and was where the Returning Officer, whose duties include overseeing the conduct of polls and directing election officials, would announce the results of each general election.

It was later rejuvenated and repurposed as a collective impact hub.

Following the discussion on youth and historic buildings, a second podcast recording will take place.

ST assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong and reporter Christie Chiu, co-hosts of the In Your Opinion podcast, will speak with

Mr Johnson Soh, founder of eldercare company SanCare Asia

, and Ms

Amanda Soon, programme executive at Fei Yue Community Services

, on how music moves the mind, and its transformative impact on dementia care.

Find out how youth volunteers have been able to get involved in inter-generational volunteering to make a difference in this area of need, in Singapore.

The audience will be able to ask questions to panelists during 15-minute Q&A sessions that will follow each podcast discussion.
