Food Picks: Grilled skewers till 2am and yakitori omakase at Yakitori One

SINGAPORE – I’ve never met a skewer I didn’t like – from Singapore’s local satay to Thai moo ping (grilled pork sticks) to China-style barbecued skewers. And the ones at Yakitori One at Suntec City are no exception. 

Established in Beijing in 2020, Yakitori One made its overseas debut here in December 2024, specialising in chicken skewers till 2am (Mondays to Saturdays) and a 15-course omakase dinner menu ($158++ a person, first seating from 6pm, second seating from 8.15pm).

It is worth splashing out on the omakase option – items subject to change – as it showcases the restaurant’s repertoire. 

My meal commences with luxe appetisers of chutoro with grated foie gras and uni, and snow crab with caviar and yuzu jelly.

Next, 10 perfectly cooked sticks arrive in quick succession, including tender liver, chewy heart aorta and tsukune. There is enough bite from cartilage and corn in the meatball, which I swirl in the chef’s secret dipping sauce, mixed with pasteurised egg yolk and grated cheese. 

Even the non-chicken items are treated with utmost care. These include the juicy zucchini “lollipop” topped with a swirl of mentaiko, super sweet pineapple chunks and a nodoguro (blackthroat sea perch) and sakura ebi don to finish. 

All items are available on the a la carte menu, so you can kick back with a selection of tasty sticks and drinks for supper.
