UNITED STATES: New York police have released body-camera footage showing the tense confrontation that ended with officers fatally shooting a man on the Brooklyn Bridge.
The incident happened on September 4 after officers responded to reports of a person in distress on the bridge.
Tense Standoff On Bridge
The NYPD identified the man as Chaun Botton. Police said he threatened officers, claimed he had a bomb and repeatedly told them he wanted to be killed.
Footage shows Botton moving along one of the bridge’s suspension cables while holding a knife. Officers wearing safety harnesses can be seen blocking his path and repeatedly ordering him to drop the weapon.
One officer is heard saying, “Drop the knife. No one wants to hurt you. Drop it.”
According to the NYPD, officers spent nearly an hour trying to persuade Botton to come down and surrender.
Body-camera footage shows the tense final moments before officers opened fire.
Officers Open Fire
Police said Botton then moved rapidly down the cable towards the officers. He allegedly came within about three feet of them before lunging with the knife.
An officer then opened fire. A gunshot and a scream can be heard in the footage before officers move in and restrain Botton.
Officers provided emergency medical treatment at the scene, but Botton was later pronounced dead.
The NYPD released the footage on October 2 under its policy of publishing body-camera video from critical incidents.
