Reservoir Breaches Trigger

Floodwater has torn through parts of southern China after heavy rain opened breaches at reservoirs in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Monday morning.

Drone footage filmed on Monday shows brown water roaring through a damaged section of the Liulan Reservoir dam in Hengzhou. Other shots show buildings cut off by floodwater, vehicles stranded in submerged streets and trees rising from the muddy current.

At least two people were killed in Nanning after breaches at the Liulan and Yunbiao reservoirs. Water also overflowed barriers at Liuwang Reservoir.

Mass Rescue Effort

Authorities say 48,000 people have been evacuated, with rescue teams racing to move residents out of danger and reach communities cut off downstream.

The flooding swamped homes, farmland and roads. Nanning raised its flood-control emergency response from Level III to Level I on Monday, the highest level in China’s four-tier system.

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management sent more than 1,000 rescuers to the region, along with vehicles, boats and drones to support the operation.
