3 injured after false ceiling collapses at Liat Towers in Orchard Road

SINGAPORE – Three people were injured after a false ceiling at Orchard Road’s Liat Towers collapsed in the afternoon of Sept 12, shocking shoppers at the building’s alfresco dining area.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance at 541 Orchard Road at about 4pm.

Two people were taken to Singapore General Hospital and another person was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Photos circulating on Facebook on Sept 12 show the collapsed structure in an alfresco area outside of acai shop Swirl Lover. Pieces of cement debris can be seen strewn across the floor, some distance away.

Swirl Lover is located on the ground floor of Liat Towers, in between fast-food chain Shake Shack and Starbucks.

When The Straits Times arrived at the scene at about 6pm, a police cordon had been put up around the collapsed structure. Several police officers were seen walking around the area.
